The SMITH D-Contact lure is a reference sinking hardbait for technical anglers seeking a reliable tool in both rivers and stillwaters. Thanks to its high-density design and particularly careful internal weight distribution, it delivers a very lively action of continuous micro-rolls that imitates the behaviour of a small fish constantly trying to re-balance itself. This natural motion triggers strikes from trout and other predators even under high fishing pressure.
Its rigging mounted on split rings and hooks with a finish that limits reflections prevents producing overly bright metallic glints that could spook educated fish. The D-Contact thus remains discreet in the water column while emitting strong vibrations. Its compactness promotes precise, long casts, allowing you to cover the most distant or hard-to-reach seams of current.
Ultra-dynamic, vibratory action to entice apathetic fish.
Strong holding power in fast, turbulent currents.
Discreet rigging to reduce parasitic reflections.
Compact body for long, accurate casts.
Excellent balance of density, stability and responsiveness to animation.
Technical specifications
Sinking hardbait with high density, ideal for quickly reaching the desired swimming depth and maintaining constant contact with the lure.
Minnow-type profile with a streamlined body, imitating a forage fish commonly present in the diet of trout and other predators.
Internal weight distribution calculated to produce a tight, continuous roll, giving the impression of a fish in perpetual rebalancing.
Rigging mounted on robust split rings, with matte-finish hooks that limit excessive flashes of light.
Design intended for use in rivers, torrents, lakes or reservoirs, suitable for upstream, three-quarter upstream and downstream presentations.
Available in several sizes and finishes, allowing adjustment of volume and visibility according to conditions.
Advantages and key strengths
The SMITH D-Contact stands out for its ability to remain perfectly controllable even in the most powerful current seams. Where many hardbaits lose their line or exit the targeted water layer, this trout lure for rivers maintains a stable trajectory, enabling precise prospecting of banks, current heads, breaks and deep holes. Its high density permits long-distance casts, essential to reach wary fish without approaching their lies.
Its very lively action on a straight retrieve is easily amplified by small rod twitches, creating unpredictable darts that trigger violent strikes. This responsiveness makes it particularly effective when fish follow without committing: a simple speed variation or a sharper pull is often enough to decide the most difficult specimens. Thanks to its robust construction and discreet yet reliable rigging, the D-Contact remains a durable choice for anglers who fish regularly.
Exceptional holding power in strong currents.
Effective both on straight retrieves and sawtooth-style animations.
Allows fishing deep water without losing contact with the lure.
Capable of attracting wild trout, stocked fish and other opportunistic predators.
A recognized reference among many anglers specialized in river fishing.
Usage tips
To get the best from the SMITH D-Contact lure, use a light to medium spinning outfit paired with a fine line that offers good sensitivity. A low-diameter braid combined with a fluorocarbon leader allows you to feel the smallest bite while keeping a discreet presentation. Cast three-quarter upstream, let the lure sink controllably, then animate it with a steady retrieve interrupted by short pauses — this often produces excellent results.
In strong currents, don't hesitate to point the rod downstream to accompany the drift and maintain constant contact. Brief rod twitches will flash the lure and accentuate its characteristic roll. In calmer water or on lakes, a sawtooth animation—alternating free-fall phases and high-rod lifts—lets you cover different water layers without spooking fish. Vary retrieve speeds, cast angles and pause lengths to adapt the D-Contact to all situations.
FAQ
Question 1 : Is this lure suitable for small, shallow rivers?
Answer: Yes, the SMITH D-Contact works very well in small rivers provided you adjust the retrieve speed and control the swimming depth. By raising the rod and animating gently, you can keep it just above obstacles without snagging.
Question 2 : Can it be used for species other than trout?
Answer: This sinking hardbait is also effective on perch, chub and other opportunistic predators, particularly in current zones or along cluttered margins where predators wait for prey.
Question 3 : What type of animation is most effective?
Answer: A straight retrieve punctuated by small twitches and brief pauses works in the majority of situations. When fish follow, intensifying the pulls near the end of the sink or abruptly varying speed can trigger the strike.
