The Smith D-Contact lure is a sinking minnow designed for demanding anglers seeking ultra-responsive behaviour in rivers and strong currents. Thanks to a carefully engineered weight distribution, it fully uses inertia to produce a constant twisting action, like a small fish fighting to regain its natural position. This distinctive dynamic generates strong visual and vibratory signals while remaining surprisingly stable during fast retrieves or twitching. Split rings and hooks have a matte finish and subdued colouring to limit artificial reflections that can spook wary fish. The result is an ultra-effective trout lure capable of provoking strikes where other models fail.

Benefits and key strengths
This trout minnow stands out for its effectiveness in challenging conditions: strong currents, deep runs, and pressured fish. Its density and compact shape let it cut through current without falling out of the strike zone and stay effective throughout the drift. The continuous twisting action, punctuated by micro-rolls, imitates a weakened baitfish while remaining discreet thanks to the sober finish of metal components. Its animation versatility makes it a true technical lure suitable for both quick prospecting and precise, thorough presentations on promising spots.
Excellent holding power in fast, turbulent currents.
Natural presentation reducing refusals from wary fish.
Versatile across seasons, water levels and different river types.
Usage tips
To get the best from the Smith D-Contact, use a responsive rod and a fine line. In rivers, cast slightly upstream, let it reach the desired depth then start retrieving. Alternate steady retrieves with short accelerations and a few rod-tip twitches to exploit its twisting action. Brief pauses, during which the lure keeps working under the current, often trigger strikes. Always adjust retrieve speed to water temperature and fish activity, working it more aggressively when fish are active and more slowly when they are holding near the bottom.
Test different retrieve speeds on every spot.
Work close to obstacles, seams and deep edges where trout hold.
Vary casting angles to present the lure along different trajectories.
FAQ
Question 1: Is this lure reserved for trout fishing?
Answer: The D-Contact was developed primarily for river trout, but its profile and action also make it effective on other medium-sized predators like perch, depending on the model chosen.
Question 2: Should it only be used in strong current?
Answer: While it excels in fast water thanks to its density and stability, this sinking minnow performs well in calmer areas too. Simply adjust depth and retrieve speed to suit pools, slow runs or quieter margins.
